Sacramento, April 9, 2015 – Two affiliates within Sutter Health’s not-for profit network received awards honoring their electronic health record. Memorial Medical Center in Modesto, Calif. and Palo Alto Medical Foundation clinics throughout the Bay Area earned prestigious Stage 7 Awards from the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) (External Link) , an industry authority in health care information technology.

Sutter Health will receive its awards at the 2015 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition (External Link) on April 12-16, 2015, in Chicago.

“As we partner to deliver a high-value, personalized experience for patients, our electronic health record enables our care teams to make significant strides in clinical quality, safety, connectivity and efficiency,” said Sutter Health President and CEO Pat Fry. “These Stage 7 designations from HIMSS honor the complex, thoughtful work of our clinical care and information services teams to better support our more than 3 million patients and their families.”

HIMSS’s Stage 7 Awards are rare and highly regarded in the health care industry. During the fourth quarter of 2014, only 3.6 percent of the more than 5,400 U.S. hospitals measured by HIMSS received the Stage 7 Award. During the third quarter of 2014, only 4.37 percent of the more than 27,000 ambulatory clinics measured by HIMSS received the Stage 7 Ambulatory Award. “Sutter Health’s EHR implementation is a star example for California and the west coast. The health care network expertly involves its medical staff to drive clinical transformation across its hospitals and care centers—all enabled by a comprehensive EHR system. Its care centers consistently use the EHR technology, showing a strong system governance and well-delivered education,” said John P. Hoyt, FACHE, FHIMSS, executive vice president, HIMSS Analytics.

Sutter Health boasts one of the most sophisticated electronic health records in the country, spanning more than 100 of Northern California’s most diverse communities. Here are some fast facts about Sutter Health’s EHR investment in its patients and communities:

    • Today, 23 hospitals and all five affiliated physician medical foundations connect to Sutter EHR, which securely and instantly shares critical information to provide safe and timely patient care.
    • As of 2014, more than 3 million patients have a unique electronic health record at Sutter Health hospitals and physician medical foundations.
    • Sutter EHR currently provides access to more than 64,000 users through its network of care, housing 10 million-plus patient records.
    • Sutter EHR processes 4.3 data transactions per second.
    • By the end of 2015, Sutter Health will have invested more than $1 billion in its electronic health record system.

Stage 7 Award: HIMSS Analytics developed the EMR Adoption Model (External Link) in 2005 as a methodology for evaluating the progress and impact of electronic health record systems for hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics™ Database. Eight stages (0-7) measure a hospital’s implementation and use of information technology applications. The final stage, Stage 7, represents an advanced patient record environment. The validation process to confirm a hospital has reached Stage 7 includes a site visit by an executive from HIMSS Analytics and former or current chief information officers to ensure an unbiased evaluation of the Stage 7 environments.

Stage 7 Ambulatory Award: Developed in 2011, the EMR Ambulatory Adoption Model provides a methodology for evaluating the progress and impact of electronic health record systems for ambulatory facilities in the HIMSS Analytics™ Database. These facilities include physician practices, clinics, outpatient centers and specialty clinics. Tracking their progress in completing eight stages (0-7), ambulatory facilities can review the implementation and use of information technology applications with the intent of reaching Stage 7, which represents an advanced electronic patient record environment.
