Modesto, August 24, 2012 – Memorial Medical Center (MMC), part of the Sutter Health network, has again been designated an Aetna Institute of Quality® (IOQ) Bariatric Surgery Facility for treating individuals living with morbid or extreme obesity.

Aetna makes information about the quality and cost of health care services available to its members to help them make informed decisions about their health care needs. In line with this goal, Aetna recognizes hospitals and facilities in its network that offer specialized clinical services for certain health conditions. Facilities are selected as an IOQ for consistently delivering evidence-based, safe care.

“We are extremely proud to receive this designation from Aetna,” said Daryn Kumar, Memorial Medical Center chief executive officer. “This is yet another indicator of the dedication and commitment put forth by our team of physicians, nurses and support staff at our Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence, and demonstrates their focus on providing the best care to patients in need of our services.”

This is the third IOQ designation received by MMC. In November, Aetna recognized the cardiac care provided by MMC with IOQ status for Cardiac Intervention and for Cardiovascular Surgery. MMC is the only hospital facility in our three-county area to receive these designations.

“A lot of people have worked very hard to make Memorial’s Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence what it is today,” said Patrick Coates, M.D., the medical director for the program. “Dr. Antonio Coirin, Dr. Matthew Coates and I feel very fortunate to be able to help make our patients’ lives better through this program. We have a terrific staff and state-of-the-art facilities at Memorial Medical Center, and we are pleased that Aetna has recognized us again with this designation.”
