Memorial Medical Center Receives STEMI Receiving Center designation by the Mountain-Valley EMS Agency

Services Designed for Timely Cardiac Care for Valley Residents

Modesto, November 10, 2011 – Memorial Medical Center (MMC), part of the Sutter Health network, announced that it has recently been designated a STEMI Receiving Center by the Mountain-Valley Emergency Medical Services Agency (MVEMSA).

As a STEMI Receiving Center (SRC), MMC is a preferred destination for patients who access the 9-1-1 system and who show evidence of experiencing a severe heart attack known as an ST-elevation myocardial infarction on a 12 lead EKG.

    “We are extremely pleased that
MVEMSA has recognized us as one of the first STEMI Receiving Centers in Stanislaus County,” said James Conforti, Memorial Medical Center chief executive officer. “It is a reflection of the work our entire cardiac care team does to provide the very best care for patients in a time-sensitive situation.”

A STEMI Receiving Center operates with specific protocols for treating patients. Patients brought in by emergency personnel are rapidly assessed and triaged, and depending on the patient's diagnosis and condition, he or she may have immediate cardiac intervention, which may include angiography, angioplasty or even bypass surgery if necessary.

“The goal is to enhance care for patients by providing rapid cardiac catheterization interventions, consequently reducing mortality and morbidity,” said Hassan Hussain, MD, Medical Director of the Chest Pain Center and STEMI Receiving Center at Memorial Medical Center. “Having the STEMI Receiving Center designation assures our patients that Memorial Medical Center has a highly skilled cardiac response team ready to treat heart attack patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.”

The STEMI designation follows MMC's recent acknowledgement as an Accredited Chest Pain Center with PCI from the Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC). Hospitals that have received SCPC accreditation have achieved a higher level of expertise in dealing with patients who arrive with symptoms of a heart attack. They emphasize the importance of standardized diagnostic and treatment programs that provide more efficient and effective evaluation as well as more appropriate and rapid treatment of patients with chest pain and other heart attack symptoms.

“As a designated STEMI Receiving Center, as well as an accredited Chest Pain Center, we work with Mountain-Valley EMS , and other emergency personnel to reduce the time from the onset of symptoms to diagnosis and then treatment,” said Mary Velasquez, MS, NP, Coordinator of Memorial’s Chest Pain Center and STEMI Receiving Center program manager. “The sooner a heart attack is treated, the less damage to the heart and the better the outcome for the patient.”

Memorial Medical Center’s state-of-the-art healthcare encompasses the entire continuum of care for the heart patient and includes such focal points as dispatch, EMS transport, emergency department, cardiac catheterization lab, and cardiac independence and congestive heart failure program.
